Free your mind
I have been a fan of "mind mapping" for a number of years, a technique for brainstorming, organising and structuring data first developed by Tony Buzan. Whilst its not the best tool in all situations, it is excellent at bringing together disparate threads within a topic and structuring it. It also tends to work well for taking notes in meetings.
Not surprisingly you can get software to produce mind maps, convert Word documents, export wikis etc etc. Most of these are actually quite expensive, however FreeMind is an open-source product that is coming up to its first main release. Its Java based, and so cross-platform, and works very well. There is still some sorting out to do but a finely honed product is emerging with a reasonable feature-set and some innovative ideas. For example, one that has been added to the latest release is the ability to enter Latex equations on to the mind map. A very neat idea. Definitely one to watch.
