Droid Calendar/Contacts Sync
The number of people that lose their phone and all their contacts..... too numerous to count. With PDAs, synchronisation was done to a desktop app (HotSync for Palm and Active Sync for Microsoft), but with a 3G access common and cloud computing pervasive many people now sync their phones to an online service. This is very easy to do out of the box for a droid device. Set up a GMail account and then enter the details in your phone.
I also wanted a desktop app and, of course, all my contacts and calendar were in my Palm T|X. So I exported my contacts (I used CSV, but VCard is probably a more reliable route) from Palm Desktop in to Essential PIM which is a USB app and works well. There is a free version, but you need the "paid-for" pro version to get synchronisation capabilities (~£19). And it does a good job of syncing with Google online, which provides me with my 3-way system (phone, online and desktop).
For those exporting from Palm Desktop, there is this is a good blog entry on options. And the biggest bugbear is no export route for the calendar. Here is an app to export a Palm calendar to iCal which will then go in to anything.
