1999-2003 Lecturer in GIS, Luton University

2003-2017 Associate Professor, Kingston University

Current Projects

  • Structure from Motion - application of structure from motion processing to low altitude aerial photography, with a focus upon the effects of image quality and optimising the processing workflow.
  • Assessment of manual and automated techniques for mapping drumlins - use of synthetically derived drumlins (within a real DEM) to generate a landscape filled, a priori, with known landforms. Following the successful GMapping Workshop, a comparison of manual interpretive mapping towards the development of objective mapping criteria.
  • Kite Aerial Photography (KAP) - exploring the use of kites as a platform for the acquisition of remotely sensed imagery.
  • Digital terrain analysis of peat landslides - assessment of potentially unstable peatlands
  • Loess spectroscopy - use as a proxy for past climate change

Software

CLustre: python script that semi-automatically classifies and groups manually mapped lineaments that will subsequently be used in a palaeo-glacial reconstruction. The code has been released on Github Full details are available in Smith et al (in press) "CLustre: semi-automated lineament clustering for palaeo-glacial reconstruction".
Download

Snow Blow: ArcGIS python script that calculates snow drift (based upon Purves et al (1999)), using an input digital elevation model and specififed wind direction. FIRST VERSION DUE SHORTLY.

Cookie Cutter: ArcGIS python script that calculates material volumes from a digital elevation model based upon an input shapefile with digitized outlines (polygons) of the features of interest. Three current versions:
ArcGIS 9.2
ArcGIS 9.3
Development

Chi-Square Test: software that calculates both the equal-probability and equal-interval methods of the chi-squared statistic for small samples. Originally programmed in 1994 using C for DOS. If there are compatibility issues with Windows then please run it using DOSBox. The ZIP file contains the last two versions of the source code, the compiled EXE, documentation (TXT and PDF) a sample data file. None of the documentation has been updated since 1994.
Download

Field Spectroscopy Data Processing (beta/developmental): a selection of R scripts designed to process field spectroscopy data. Specficically, there are 2 main scripts: (1) plotting correlgrams for raw and first derivative spectra and (2) calculation of continuum removed spectra, with plots of BDNA and BDNC. The ZIP file contains the scripts themselves, explanatory text and some sample data. They are provided "as-is" and whilst the scripts have been bug tested, they may not operate as expected.
